Nineteen-year-old Max Blansjaar spent the first few years of his musical career as a virtuoso classical pianist. In late 2017 he started to experiment with his unique brand of lo-fi pop music, writing and recording a collection of songs on an old computer at his school; the result was Blansjaar’s debut EP 'Spit It Out!', a record that captured attention with its seamless combination of chunky grunge guitars, unusual samples and intelligent, witty lyricism.
The EP was released by indie label Beanie Tapes when Max Blansjaar was just fifteen, and the limited edition run of 50 cassettes sold out in a day – since then, the Dutch-born teenager gained a reputation for his energetic live shows, playing to packed crowds at the likes of Truck Festival and Ritual Union with his multi-instrumentalist four-piece band and pocket-sized drum machine. A year on from his debut, 2019 saw the release of his second EP, 'Fantasy Living', a soberly synth-soaked account of the calm and chaos of modern adolescence that once again set him apart as one of the most idiosyncratic young talents on the DIY scene. Now, no longer a schoolboy but still armed with the same wide-eyed abandon, Max Blansjaar enters 2022 with a fresh live show, along with new music set for release later in the year. The world is but a playground.
